COMMENT : Mirages and illusions — Mir Mohammad Ali Talpur

A ‘political government’ is too lofty a word for the set-up that is subservient to the wishes of the army and FC and does not even have the spine to condemn the very recent killing of seven Bugtis

Mir Muhammad Ali TalpurDr Abdul Malik claims his government is developing a ‘Balochistan Strategy Paper’ to outline political and economic problems and suggest remedies. If nothing else, it will certainly devote a special chapter to methods for creating smokescreens and pretexts for the continuing ‘dirty war’ against the Baloch, which has already claimed more than 700 victims in the last three years. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) mission, headed by Asma Jehangir, recently visited Balochistan and as if to thumb their nose at HRCP, the security forces massacred Bugtis near Sui. Asma Jehangir talking to the press said, “While the HRCP was in Balochistan, seven young men were picked up from Mathh area of Dera Bugti by the FC, and subsequently summarily executed. Reportedly, their mothers were callously told to take a good look at the faces of their sons, as that would be their last opportunity to do so.” She also said: “The security forces and the intelligence agencies will hurt the democratic process and further alienate people from the state if they continue with their oppressive policies. Law and order is dismal. Citizens are living in perpetual fear. They have no security of life and indignity at the hands of the security forces is routine.” Regarding sectarian killings, she said: “Sectarian militants operate with impunity.”

The gold challenge to new Balochistan chief minister

reko-diq-01

The new chief minister was taken by the Chileans on a free junket to Chile and Canada

DUBAI: Besides the hot political issues of bringing back the angry and desperate nationalists and militants back into the mainstream, the new chief minister of Balochistan has another burning issue to handle —- the multi hundred billion gold mines at Reko Diq and who will be given its mining rights.

Following the Supreme Court judgments in the Reko Diq case, the biggest mining Canadian-Chilean conglomerate was thrown out of Pakistan and has filed, and lost, two cases in international arbitration tribunals but in Pakistan the fate of the mines and how it would be awarded for mining is yet to be decided. The Government of Balochistan will have the major say in this decision.

COMMENT : A futile rearguard action — Mir Mohammad Ali Talpur

This ineffectual and futile rearguard action of putting up an apparently liberal and secular face in Balochistan is aimed at mollifying liberals and deceiving the Baloch people in general

Mir Muhammad Ali TalpurThe liberal circles in general, and pseudo-nationalists of Balochistan in particular, are ecstatic, too precipitously I’d say, over Nawaz Sharif’s decision to put Dr Abdul Malik in the saddle in Balochistan. The accolades and felicitations would have one believe that Mr Sharif’s ‘gift’ is a panacea for and a salve to all the injustices and atrocities perpetrated against the Baloch people and Balochistan for the last 65 years. Incidentally, this best choice of the establishment just is not good enough to help it stem the rising tide of demands for freedom.
