The poor daughter of Balochistan

Benazir is not a traditional Balochi name, so I asked her mother why she named her so. Her reply: “mun watee zagae naam Benazir kurt k ha hum Benazir a dolla zal a jorr beet…” (I named my daughter Benazir with the dream that my daughter will be like Benazir, educated and powerful).

Benazir, a 16-year-old girl from Balochistan’s gas rich Dera Bugti district, came with blood-soaked clothes and escorted by her malnourished and traumatised parents to a government hospital in Quetta.

عورت تحریک اور اُس کے تقاضے

تاریخ بتاتی ہے کہ گیارہ ہزار سال قبل مہر گڑھ ہی میں انسان، امیر اور غریب میں بٹ چکے تھے۔ انسان کی حاکم اور محکوم میں تقسیم ہوچکی تھی۔ اورعورتوں کو محکوم طبقے میں ہانکنے کا عمل مکمل ہوچکا تھا۔ اگلے گیارہ ہزار سال تو بس اس محکو میت کو مزید گہرا ،پیچیدہ، حقیر اور قابلِ نفرت بناتے رہنے کے سال تھے۔ اس لیے جو لوگ عورت کی عقل کو پاؤ ں کی ایڑھی میں سمجھتے ہیں، اسے بُزوالے دل کی مالک سمجھتے ہیں، اُسے محکوم رکھتے ہیں وہ آج سے ایسا نہیں کر رہے ہیں بلکہ یہ سلسلہ گیارہ ہزار سال پرانی چلی آرہی ہیں۔ مہا تما بدھ سے قبل، حضرت موسیٰ ؑ سے بھی قبل، حضرت عیسؑ یٰ سے بھی قبل ۔ گیارہ ہزار سال قبل۔اِن گیارہ ہزار سال میں کتنے دانا آئے ، کتنے صوفی سینٹ، شاعر، نیک اور مصلح آئے مگر عورت کی محکومی اور اس کا تنزل جاری رہا۔اِسے جاری رہنا بھی تھا اس لیے کہ فیوڈل اور ما قبل فیوڈل سماجوں میں اِس محکومی کی ضرورت تھی۔ جاگیرداری اور اس سے قبل والے سماج میں عورت کا ذاتی ملکیت کی ’’چیز ‘‘ہونا اُس سماج کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے ۔

Balochistan: Young Baloch mother dies as Pak army didn’t allow her treatment

Within 120km vicinity of sub-district Dasht, Kech, there is no maternity clinical facility to help ease the birth complications

BALOCHISTAN : A young Baloch mother died of maternal complications after the Pakistan army did not let her pass a military check post to go for treatment in Turbat town of Balochistan Tuesday last week.

According to detail 18-year-old pregnant Moona Assa died a tragic death at her home on early hours of Tuesday last week as result of delivery complication when Pakistan Army at Zarren Bug check post didn’t allow her and other members of her family to go to Turbat city to seek maternal Clinic care.

Karima Baloch: Campaigning for Independence From Pakistan

Karima is seen as either a dangerous political actor and a threat to the nation’s security or a local hero and a beacon of hope. 

Karima Baloch is a terrorist. Or a human rights activist. Depends on whom you ask.

If you ask her, as OZY did, she’ll tell you: “We believe in peaceful means of struggle.” But then she confuses the issue by adding: “Those who have taken up arms against state forces have also a good justification.”

If one is to commit the blasphemy of dismissing the vacuous references to the ‘Balochistan’s peculiar traditions, every now and then flaunted by the powers that be, it is already one of the worst places on earth for women.

A decade long insurgency and a growing dependency of its women on the male members of their families to negotiate with modernity, coupled with negligible opportunities for participation in public sphere, have come together to exact enormous miseries on women of Balochistan. More so in the rural areas of Baloch inhabited districts of the province, where Pakistan’s military and Baloch separatists have their horns locked for quite some time now.
