ISLAMABAD, May 16: The overall voter turnout in the recent elections was impressive, but not in most of the constituencies in Balochistan.
In PB-41 (Awaran), the turnout was 1.18 per cent and Abdul Judoos Bizenjo of the Pakistan Muslim League was declared winner with only 544 votes. Mir Hidayatullah of the National Party, who bagged 95 votes, was the runner-up.
Of the 57,666 registered votes in the constituency, only 672 were cast. (1.16% voter turnout)
The May 11 parliamentary election is being seen by both the Pakistan state and insurgents as a referendum on secessionism
If actions speak louder than words, then in Balochistan, the elections this weekend are being made out to be some kind of a referendum on the demand for independence by separatist groups. Encouraged by the participation of nationalist parties in this election after boycotting them in 2008, the federal and provincial governments are eager to package this as a vote against the separatist agenda though they are not saying this in as many words as there is no telling what the turnout will be.
As the joy of Christmas dawned worldwide from Manila in the east to Managua in the west, and places in between, the spirit celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace bypassed Pakistan.
Most of the country was distracted by the frenzy of a cricket match against rival India, while its tiny Christian population was observing one of their darkest years ever.
But the condition of Pakistan’s Christians on this, their “dark Christmas,” paled when compared to what was unfolding in the country’s southwest region at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.
Illegalities committed under the cover of the constitution or judicial approval does not make them either palatable or morally acceptable
The army through General Kayani has stated its position on the Balochistan issue in a one-liner that says, “Army fully supports any political process as long as it is within the Constitution.” This was in response to the Balochistan National Party President Akhtar Mengal’s recent moves and statements during his visit and the reactions to it. This short army statement has set the parameters for those who would try to deal with the issue of Baloch rights and the consequences therein to the Baloch for demanding their inalienable rights. This ISPR statement also warned that any steps taken in violation of the constitution would be unacceptable.
