The death of Sindhi nationalist activist Aqib Chandio has been confirmed by the relatives and the Sindhi nationalist organization.
In a video statement published on social media, Sindhi activist Aqib Chandio’s sister Shazia Chandio said that the body found in recent days is of her brother Aqib Chandio. Shazia Chandio has requested to the authorities that her brother’s body be handed over to her.
Shazia Chandio said that she was out of touch from social media for the past few days due to which she did not get timely information, but when she received the photos of the body, she identified the brother by his clothes and outlook.
However, Shazia Chandio says that if her brother has been murdered, his body should be handed over to her.
The Sindhi pro-freedom organization Jasmam declaring Aqib Chandio as a national martyr, issued a statement that said Aqib Chandio was killed by the Pakistani state as part of a conspiracy. The statement further said that the organization declared to perform funeral prayers in absentia of Aqib Chandio across Sindh.
It is worthy to mention here that on 1 September 2022, the news was issued in the media that a body was found near the border of Iran, which was transferred to the hospital by the local administration. Later sources said that the body was that of Aqib Chandio, an activist belonging to a Sindhi nationalist group who had been forcibly disappeared three times.
However, social media were filled with conflicting statements as a clear picture of the body was not issued and the said area was not confirmed by the authorities.
According to sources close to Aqib Chandio, said that on 4 July 2022, he was abducted by Pakistani state forces intelligence agencies from Hub Chowki in Balochistan, after being forcibly disappeared two times previously, this time Aqib’s body was found near the border of Iran.
Aqib Chandio, was released previously after being twice a victim of enforced disappearance, based on his links to Sindhi independence nationalist parties.
First time, he was forcibly disappeared from Larkana, Sindh in 2018 and was released in September 2019 after being detained for one year and four months.
Aqib Chandio was detained for the second time in July 2020 from Gulistan-e-Johar area of Karachi, in front of his sister, wife and mother by Pakistan intelligence agencies and Rangers personnel, and later the video footage of this incident was also made public. He was released again in February 2021, after his second enforced disappearance.
Reports of forced disappearances of nationalist political activists by Pakistani security forces have been receiving frequent from Balochistan as well as from Sindh. The political and human rights organizations of Sindh claim that Pakistani secret agencies and other forces are involved in these enforced disappearances.
According to Voice for Missing Persons of Sindh, an organization working against enforced disappearances in Sindh and for the recovery of missing Sindhis, so far, dozens of Sindhi activists have been extra-constitutional detained from different areas of Sindh by the Pakistani security forces. While the mutilated bodies of many of them have been recovered later.
According to Voice for Missing Persons of Sindh, Counter Terrorism Department is detaining Sindhi activists and killing them in fake encounters to prove them as terrorists.
