Balochistan teachers refuse polls duty

Quetta: Government teachers of eleven districts of Balochistan have refused to perform duties during May 11, election due to security threats.

According to details, after receiving the threats, 18,461 teachers from the 11 districts were advised to refrain from participating in the polls.

The Balochistan Government Teachers Association (BGTA), in a letter addressed to the governor and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), expressed its reservations, saying teachers have been receiving constant threats from banned outfits. Teachers are being warned that they should not perform election duties otherwise they would have to face the consequences. The most sensitive districts include Kalat, Noshki, Chaghi, Makran, Gwadar, Khuzdar, Panjgur, Mastung, Saryab and Kharan.

On the other hand, the ECP has warned government servants refusing election duties on any pretext of stern action. The ECP authorised Returning Officers across the country to issue arrest warrants for government employees not willing to perform election duties.

It is pertinent to mention that pro-freedom Baloch political parties and the Baloch freedom fighters have announced to boycott Pakistani elections in Balochistan. The Baloch freedom fighters have warned the common public to stay away from candidates of Pakistan, their campaign and the polling stations.

The Baloch fighters are of the views that Balochistan is an occupied territory and Pakistani elections on an occupied land are only aimed at strengthening the griped of occupying state on Baloch land.
