Pakistan’s siege of Lyari ignored- BY TAREK FATAH

TORONTO -Last Sunday, 50 men, women and children protested on Front Street about an issue that has escaped the attention of most of the world.

If there isn’t a massive outcry soon, it could result in a massacre that would remind us of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1944.

I’m talking about the town of Lyari in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi.

Toronto, May 6, 2012 – Baloch Human Rights Council (Canada) and the International Voice for Baloch Missing Persons jointly staged a peaceful protest condemning the brutal police/paramilitary operation in Lyari, Karachi resulting in the death of scores of innocent civilians including an eight-year old child crushed to death by an armoured personnel carrier of the security forces. The siege of Lyari by the police force that lasted eight days was an ordeal of worst form of human rights abuses witnessed by the 1.7 million inhabitants in its entire history including the periods of military dictatorships of the past.

A protest rally against Pakistani state operation in Lyari was held in front of 10 Downing Street on Sunday May 6 2012. Protest was organised by Baloch Human Rights Council (UK) and World Sindhi Congress. A large number of the Baloch and Sindhis from all over UK attended the rally.
